Fair Usage Policy

Most ISPs are now switching from 'unlimited' broadband to 'fair usage' broadband. This makes sense in today's world of increased internet usage, and provides a better online experience for everyone.

The internet works a bit like banks and your money. You can draw out what you need, when you need it, but should everyone decide to draw out all their money in one go, the banks would run out of money and everything would grind to a halt. The internet is like this and if everyone makes average use of their connection, there's more than enough bandwidth for everyone. However, if one or two heavy users decide to be greedy, then it could have a knock-on effect for everyone.

After two years of providing unlimited internet usage to our broadband customers, we have a pretty good idea of how much people use, so our fair usage quotas have been calculated to provide the best value for money and flexibility for our subscribers, and we've listened to your individual needs.

Most customers use around 6-7 GB of data each month, so our standard service provides up to 15 GB of data, which is more than double what most people require anyway, providing that little bit of lee-way for when you want to download that extra movie or collection of holiday photos etc.

To cater for everyone, we've introduced a special, 'lite user' tariff for those who want the benefit that broadband has to offer, but make little use of the internet, and for those who use the internet more - the power users - we can offer a whopping 40 GB quota.

All our quotas work on a monthly basis, which means that they get reset each month and unlike some ISPs we won't cut you off or disconnect you if you happen to go over quota. All that happens is that your connection will slow down as you reach your limit, so your connection becomes as slow as dialup - but you can still login to fetch emails etc. Once the monthly reset occurs your quota is reset and your line returns to full speed.

We can even supply individual top-ups on a per GB basis, so that if you occasionally require more than your monthly quota you can temporarily upgrade on a per-month basis - or if you find you're regularly exceeding your quota you can always regrade to the next tariff up. We're pretty flexible, so please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

What 1 GB gives you

1 GB is actually quite a lot of data, so as an example, here's what 1 GB will give you. Simply multiply by the quota for your chosen tariff to find out what it gives you.

1 GB is equivalent to1,000 MB
...which is equivalent to1,000,000 KB
...which is equivalent to1,024,000,000 bytes
(1 KB = 1024 bytes)

Or, in English, approximately....

   • one feature length movie

   • 210 MP3 music tracks

   • 500 Eight megapixel camera photo (JPEG) images
